Mental Health and Addictions

Like other provinces in Canada, substance-related harms in Manitoba are a growing concern. The SPECTRUM partnership listed mental health and addictions as a priority research area moving forward. Areas identified for further research included: youth, particularly how mental health impacts suspension, addiction, and incarceration, as well as the necessity to use research to support needs-based planning across school districts; mapping and tracking, including tracking long-term outcomes after suicide attempts or ideation, determining how mental health treatment is recorded in Electronic Medical Records, and mapping of geographical prevalence of mental health disorders alongside access to mental health treatment, as well as identifying programs that are working well; and Indigenous populations, including an Indigenous definition of mental health and wellness, data on First Nation eating disorders, and 2SLGBTQ community mental health issues and access to services and resources in Northern communities and on reserve.
